Bring New Light to Your Farm
Agricultural Efficient Lighting
South River EMC is offering a 25% rebate for the cost incurred by farmers to fully convert the lighting in hog, turkey and chicken houses from incandescent lighting to cold cathode or compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). Rebate is based solely on the cost of materials. Vist our lighting calculator to see how much money you will save by making the light switch!
Eligibility
•Farm must receive electric service from South River EMC.
•The lighting conversion must have taken place in the last 180 days preceding the request for rebate.
•Must provide all original receipts for purchase of new lighting fixtures (only applies to T-8) or bulbs. If your receipt does not clearly indicate CFL or cold cathode light purchase and the number of lamps per package, please also send in proof of purchase from the packaging (name of manufacturer, product and number of bulbs).
•The farm must be checked for verification of compliance by an authorized South River EMC employee before rebate is issued.
Program Requirements:
• All incandescent bulbs in the facility must be converted to CFL or cold cathode.
• In instances where dimming is necessary, cold cathode lighting is recommended, but dimmable CFLs are acceptable.
• T-12 magnetic ballasts must be converted to more efficient T-8 electronic ballasts.
Restrictions:
• Rebates are subject to change without notice.
• All rebates are subject to approval and are contingent upon fund availability.
• Rebates will not be honored in cases where CFL or cold cathode bulbs are replacing energy efficient bulbs.
How to apply:
• Determine the number of bulbs needed to complete the job and which bulbs will work best for your particular application.
• Complete the installation.
• Complete an application for rebate by downloading an application, calling our office at 910-892-8071 or by e-mailing a request for application to sremc@sremc.com.

Example: Turkey Farm
Lighting within each of eight turkey houses is with 60-watt incandescent lamps. There are 52 lamps per house. CFL’s would be $497.43 per year, per house. At $7.50 per lamp, the cost to purchase 52 CFL lamps would be $390. Meanwhile, the energy cost savings for switching to cold cathode lamps is $550.35 per year, per house. At $7.95 per lamp, the cost to purchase 52 cold cathode lamps would be $413.40. The payback on either lamp is about 9 months but with the 25% rebate, the payback period would be reduced to about 6 ½ months. Since the cold cathode lamps have 80% more life expectancy compared to the CFL, it would be the logical choice for replacement.
