That Second Refrigerator or Freezer Costs

Second refrigerators and freezers are large energy users and can cost from $13-16 monthly. This program offers an incentive to members who dispose of an operational second refrigerator or freezer. Not only will the members receive a $50 rebate, but they will save $166-194 annually on their electric costs.

When should you replace and recycle?

If you have a second fridge in the garage or basement.

Recycle it now!

Odds are it's an old unit, you don't use it much — and it's costing more to run than you think. If you really need a second fridge, replace it with a right-sized Energy Star model.

If your fridge or freezer was manufactured before 1993.

It's time for a new one.

You're wasting $100 or more in electricity to run a fridge that's at the end of its life. Before it breaks, replace it with an Energy Star qualified fridge or freezer that's no bigger than you need. They cost only half as much to run and offer advanced technology to keep your food fresher longer.

If your fridge or freezer was manufactured between 1993 and 1999.

  • The person surrendering the refrigerator/freezer must be a member of South River EMC.
  • No member will receive more than two refrigerator/freezer rebates.

  • Member will ensure doors are removed from refrigerator or freezer before disposal.
  • Member is responsible for delivering refrigerator/freezer to a qualified recycling site (see next three steps) or making arrangements for pick-up.
  • Qualified recyclers will ensure the appliance will be recycled according to federal law and not re-sold or re-used.
  • Qualified recyclers will ensure all refrigerant is recovered prior to dismantling or disposing and that all mercury, used oil and PCBs will be properly managed and stored.
  • When possible the recycler we will recover the foam to avoid any significant ozone-depletion or greenhouse gas emissions from shredding and/or landfilling.

How to apply for a rebate:

  • Member must complete a refrigerator/freezer turn-in rebate application and submit it to South River EMC before taking appliance to recycling site.
  • Once the application is accepted, an authorized agent of South River EMC will make an appointment and visit the member’s facility.
  • At the time of inspection, the member agrees to have the refrigerator/freezer plugged in and operating.
  • Once the unit has been verified as operational, the unit will be prominently marked with an X and the cord will be removed.
  • The member will be provided with a recycler verification form to take to an authorized recycling center.
  • Once the appliance has been dropped off for recycling, the attendant will sign the agreement form and the member will return the form to South River EMC.
  • Once the authorization form is received and processed, the member will receive a $50 rebate within 30 days.
