Energy Star Heating And Cooling Rebates

Energy Star Heat Pump Rebate

Energy Star qualified heat pumps have a higher seasonal energy efficiency rating (SEER) and heating seasonal performance factor than standard models, which makes them about 8% more efficient than standard new models and 20% more efficient than what you may have in your home currently.

Replacing old heating and cooling equipment (13 SEER or lower) with an Energy Star qualified heat pump can cut annual energy bills by nearly $200. By installing an Energy Star high efficiency heat pump in a newly constructed home, contractors are providing the homeowner with a source of lower electric use and increased comfort.

Energy Star Central Air Conditioning Rebate

A central air conditioner model consists of one or more factory-made assemblies which normally include an evaporator or cooling coil(s), compressor(s), and condenser(s). Central air conditioners provide the function of air-cooling, and may include the functions of air-circulation, air-cleaning, dehumidifying or humidifying. High efficiency Energy Star certified central air conditioners are eligible for installation in all homes with central air conditioning, but without the use of an electric heat pump.  For this measure, the baseline replacement model remains at seasonal energy efficiency ratio, or SEER, 13.

Energy savings based on the energy use difference between a new SEER 13 unit and the Tier 1, Tier 2 units. Although in a replacement situation, the energy savings may be greater, the purpose of this incentive is to encourage purchase of a higher-efficiency unit. All figures based on GDS study.  Member must complete an application for a rebate, providing the model number, as well as, the "Certificate of Product Rating" to accompany the application. An employee may randomly make a visit to the home to verify that this equipment is installed.

Note: The central air conditioner also needs a blower motor – which is usually part of the furnace – to blow the cool air through the duct system. The only way to ensure that a new air conditioner performs at its rated efficiency is to replace the heating system at the same time. It’s especially recommended if the furnace is over 15 years old. If a new energy-efficient air conditioner is connected to an older furnace and blower motor, the system will not perform to its rated efficiency.

Qualifying Units and Rebate Amounts:

  • Heat Pumps - 15 SEER or higher                              $200 each unit
  • Geothermal HP*                                                       $300 each unit
  • Central AC Only - 15 SEER                                     $25 each unit
  • Central AC Only-  16 SEER or higher                       $50 each unit

Application Instructions:
• Complete and sign application
• Return application to South River EMC along with a copy of the AHRI Certificate of Product Rating—rebate will not be processed without this document. This document is available from your installer.

System Requirements:
• When replacing an existing unit, the old unit must not have an efficiency ratio (SEER) greater than 13.
• *Geothermal units must be a minimum EER of 19 and existing equipment can not be greater than EER of 17.
• System must be installed by a NC licensed heating and cooling contractor.
