Position Title: Mechanic

Responsibilities/duties for the position include, but are not limited to: performing preventive maintenance on a regular schedule for all cooperative vehicles and equipment; maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies and parts; processing of needed paperwork for records; maintaining the cleanliness, orderliness and safety of work area; inspecting/testing vehicles and equipment; controlling costs of assignments; personal productivity, quality and quantity of work; working independently; providing assistance to other service personnel; adherence to schedules and deadlines for assigned work; understanding and  performing all duties in accordance with applicable safety and Cooperative policy manuals, as well as reporting hazardous conditions for the safety of the employees, consumers and general public.

Applicant must have a high school education or equivalent. Associates degree in automotive mechanics preferred. Prefer dealership training in specialty technical areas such as electronics, fuel injection, heating and air conditioning systems, power train systems and braking systems. Will consider related work experience (min. four years) in lieu of educational requirements if there is demonstrated ability to carry out the position requirements. Should be able to understand inventory control and storage principles. Required to pass a physical examination and drug test when employed. Must have the physical ability to perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the job.

Special Requirements: must have North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License- Class A; must be able to operate a fork lift; enrollment/completion of courses provided by Terex and Altec in order to become certified to work South River EMC vehicles and equipment; must provide own tools to perform job duties as required; state certified welder;

Position Title: Apprentice Lineman

The responsibilities and duties of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Working with 2nd and 1st class lineman to construct and maintain distribution power lines within the scope and certification.
  • Climbing poles of all types and performing jobs required of lineman off the poles, including changing out of arms, transformers, conductors, etc.
  • Studying and learning the required job knowledge and skills in order to advance in a timely manner through the complete apprenticeship program.
  • Must be able to obtain their CDL’s Class A in order to progress through the apprenticeship program
  • Cutting right of way, trimming trees, etc. to restore service.
  • Must be able to frequently lift 50 to 100 pounds. Other duties not listed here.

Applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent required. Graduation from vocational/technical school in power line studies is preferred. Will consider related work experience in lieu of educational requirements if there is demonstrated ability to carry out the position responsibilities.Enrollment/completion of an apprenticeship lineman program is required. Required to pass a physical examination and drug test when employed. Must have the physical ability to perform the essential functions, duties and responsibilities of the job.

Two years of experience in power line construction and/or maintenance may be substituted for vocational/technical education and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Also, helpful to have progressive experience with a utility and a thorough understanding of a utility, specifically a cooperative.
