News1/15/2010 Basketball Scholarships Available For Middle School StudentsSouth River EMC, one of North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives, is providing deserving students the opportunity to attend two local basketball camps again this year. The scholarships are being offered to rising 6-8th grade females to attend the Kellie Harper Basketball Camp at N.C. State University and to rising 6-8th grade males to attend the Roy Williams Basketball Camp at UNC-Chapel Hill. North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives will send more than 50 students to the camps this year. Middle school students are chosen from the South River EMC area to attend the basketball camps on an all- expense- paid scholarship. Parents are responsible for transportation the day of the camp.
In 2009, three students were chosen to attend, two for the girl’s camp and one for the boy’s camp. Winners of the Touchstone Energy Kellie Harper Basketball Camp Scholarship will attend the overnight camp in Raleigh, June 20-23, while winners of the Touchstone Energy Roy Williams Basketball Camp Scholarship will attend the overnight camp in Chapel Hill, June 19-23.
Kellie Harper was named head coach of the Wolfpack women’s basketball team last season, after five winning seasons as head coach at Western Carolina. Roy Williams is in his seventh season with the Tar Heels and has led the team to two national titles and three Final Fours. Both coaches will use the help of their staff and current players to conduct their camps. Both camps will work closely with each camper to develop skills that will benefit the young athletes both on and off the court.
Not only does the program allow North Carolina middle school students to spend time on a college campus, it also gives them the opportunity to receive individual and group instruction from two successful collegiate coaches to enhance their basketball skills.
