News4/12/2010 Community Assistance Corporation Awards Grants to the CommunitySouth River Electric Membership Corporation’s foundation, the Community Assistance Corporation, funded over $34,000 in grants recently through Operation Round Up. The money was distributed to the following agencies: Partnership for Children of Johnston County, $2,500; Beacon Rescue Mission, $4,288.35; SAFE of Harnett County, Inc.; “As we struggle tor rebound from the recession, it is gratifying to see our Cooperative members continue to support their neighbors through Operation Round Up,” said Community Assistance Corporation Executive Director Catherine O’Dell. Through Operation Round Up, South River EMC members agree to have their bill rounded up to the next dollar each month. If their bill is $98.91, the 9¢ remaining will be put into an account managed by the Community Assistance Corporation. Currently, over 77% of the Cooperative’s members are helping change the lives of their neighbors, friends and fellow-cooperative members through this program. Since the program’s inception in 2008, South River EMC members have dispersed $297,958.88 to the community in the form of grants through the Cooperative Assistance Corporation. The funds are distributed quarterly to local service agencies, educational pursuits or to aid families who are experiencing unusually grave times. The next funding cycle will be for June and applications are now available. The deadline to turn applications in is May 17.
