Community Assistance Awarded To Schools and Non-Profits

South River Electric Membership Corporation’s foundation, the Community Assistance Corporation, funded over $44,000 in grants recently through Operation Round Up.

The Foundation awarded educational grants to the following schools: South View High School, $3,042; Cape Fear High, $7,939.62; Sampson County Schools, $2,500; and Fayetteville State University, $5,000. Grants were also awarded to the following agencies: Sampson County Sheriff’s Office, $5,000; Disabled American Veterans Chapter 74 Erwin, $5,000; Sampson County History Museum, $5,000;  Dolly Pardon Imagination Library, $5,000; Just-A-Mere Garden Club, $1,200; Partnership for Children of Sampson County, $5,000.

“The Community Assistance Corporation board members take very seriously their responsibility to be good stewards of the money entrusted to them by the members of South River EMC,” said Catherine O’Dell, manager of member and public affairs, South River EMC. “They carefully select the programs that will be funded to ensure they provide a value to the community -- and this latest round of recipients are a testament to that commitment.”

To date, South River EMC members have donated $342,640.50 to our local communities through Operation Round Up.

Through Operation Round Up, South River EMC members agree to have their bill rounded up to the next dollar each month. If their bill is $89.92, the 8¢ remaining will be put into an account managed by the Community Assistance Corporation.

Funds are distributed quarterly to local service agencies, educational pursuits or to aid families who are experiencing unusually grave times. The round of applications will be reviewed in September. Applications are now available and must be completed and returned to the Cooperative office by August 27 in order to be considered for funding.

South River EMC is a locally-owned and operated electric cooperative, which provides electric service to 42,000 homes, farms and businesses in parts of Harnett, Cumberland, Sampson, Johnston and Bladen counties.
