Students Attend Kellie Harper and Roy Williams Basketball Camp

Casey Edens, of Harnett Central Middle School, and Aniya Williams, of JW Seabrook Elementary, participated in the Kellie Harper Basketball Academy and Steven Sawicki, of Gray’s Creek Middle School, attended the Roy Williams Basketball Camp.

All three students attended on scholarships provided by South River EMC. Casey is the daughter of Curtis and Kim Edens of Lillington; Aniya is the daughter of Fabrienne Rhone and Owen Williams of Fayetteville; and Steven is the son of Steve and Amy Sawicki of Saint Pauls.

Casey and Aniya were two of approximately 26 young women, while Steven was one of the 27 young men awarded scholarships through North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives.

Winners of the Kellie Harper and Roy Williams Basketball Camp scholarships are selected by through an application process, which includes an essay detailing the students’ reason for wanting to attend the camp.

The Kellie Harper Basketball Academy was held June 20 -23 at N.C. State University in Raleigh and The Roy Williams Basketball Camp was held June 19 -23 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“These camps are an opportunity for deserving students to hone their athletic skills while learning the key elements of leadership and teamwork,” said South River EMC CEO and Executive Vice President Buddy G. Creed.

This is the seventh year that North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives have sponsored basketball camps. 

South River EMC is a locally-owned and operated electric cooperative, which provides electric service to 42,000 homes, farms and businesses in parts of Harnett, Cumberland, Sampson, Johnston and Bladen counties.
