South River EMC would like to bring to attention something that everyone should be aware of when answering the phone – scammers.
Scammers have been reaching out to area residents with a demand for payment of an “outstanding” utility bill. The caller states that they are from the electric company and that electric service will be disconnected in 30 minutes if a payment is not made immediately. The scammers then tell the unsuspecting victim to go purchase a preloaded credit card and call a provided number to make payment. The caller ID could actually be spoofed to show up as South River EMC.
If you receive a call like this, hang up! South River EMC does not call you to demand payment immediately. You can call South River EMC at 910.892.8071 to check your balance any time or visit sremc.com and log-in to your online account.
You might think this could never happen to you, but always remain aware of what could be happening when you answer the phone. Remember, if it doesn’t seem right, it might not be.
Again, if you have questions about your South River EMC electric account, please contact the Cooperative at 910.892.8071 or visit sremc.com.
South River EMC is a locally owned and operated electric cooperative, which provides electric service to 43,000 homes, farms and businesses in parts of Harnett, Cumberland, Sampson, Johnston and Bladen counties.
